Lexington offering free trash disposal day this Saturday

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — Lexington is giving Fayette County residents a chance to clean out some clutter this weekend.

According to the City of Lexington, a free trash disposal day is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 10, from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Bluegrass Regional Transfer Station, located at 1505 Old Frankfort Pike.

City officials say Fayette County residents can bring up to one pickup truck load of non-hazardous household waste at no cost. Items can also be brought in a car or SUV.

Trash that’s normally accepted through the city’s curbside collection program will be accepted for free during the event. However, some items will still require a fee, and others will not be accepted at all.

What you need to know before you go

  • Enter the site at the blue and white “Bluegrass Regional Transfer Station” sign

  • Bring a valid Fayette County driver’s license or ID with a Lexington address

  • Loads must fit in a standard truck bed or inside a car or SUV

  • Loads must be covered with a tarp and level with the vehicle

  • Commercial vehicles are not allowed

  • All loads are subject to inspection, and final acceptance is up to transfer station staff

Items accepted at no cost

  • Mattresses and box springs

  • Bagged household trash

  • Small indoor furniture, such as tables and chairs

  • Up to four tires (off the rim)

Items accepted for a fee

  • Outdoor furniture and grills

  • Appliances and electronics

  • Tire rims or more than four tires

  • Yard waste

  • Construction or remodeling debris

  • Outdoor sheds or shelters

  • Water hoses

Items not accepted

  • Hazardous materials

  • Free-flowing liquids, including paint or pool chemicals

  • Medical waste

City officials say appliances, electronics and household hazardous waste will not be accepted for free during this event. Residents can visit lexingtonky.gov/wastemanagement for disposal options for those items.

The City of Lexington offers free disposal days four times a year — in January, April, July and October. Residents can sign up for text or email alerts about future waste management events at lexingtonky.gov/311alerts.
