Lexington native convicted of killing boyfriend asks for new trial

NEWPORT, Ky. (AP) — A Lexington native who was convicted of murder in the fatal shooting her boyfriend during an argument is requesting a new trial.

The Kentucky Enquirer reports lawyers for 24-year-old Shayna Hubers filed the request in Campbell Circuit Court on Tuesday, less than a week after her conviction. The motion says defense attorneys were not allowed to present evidence and witnesses that would have shown Hubers killed 29-year-old Ryan Poston in self-defense during an argument in 2012.

During the trial, prosecutors honed in on text messages Hubers sent to a friend saying she was going to a shooting range with Poston, who was trying to break things off with her, and planned to kill him and make it look like an accident.

A hearing on the motion is set for next Friday.
