Lexington middle schoolers win NPR podcast challenge
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Two Lexington middle schoolers have gained national attention after winning National Public Radio’s podcast challenge, a nationwide contest to find talented young podcasters.
The students, Brennan Williams and Braeden Collett, put the spotlight on some of the school’s unsung heroes hoping to give other students a better understanding and appreciation for the people who keep things running smoothly behind-the-scenes.
“I guess the main thing that went through our heads is that we want to do something that people took for granted,” Williams said.
It was clear many had no clue how much work maintenance did on a daily basis when the pair surveyed students, asking them how many people they think is on the maintenance crew.
Some guesses were 15, 50 and 20. The correct answer is five.
“They deserve to have people know about what they do and what all they go through to make our school run,” Collett said.
The boys said they didn’t expect to win NPR’s middle school podcast challenge. They simply wanted to explore their love for audio while telling an important story about their hardworking neighbors who they would hear all the time while in the school’s studio.
The two unsung heroes of the podcast are Steve Guynn and Robert Smith. They said they’re humbled.
“We were kinda surprised and taken aback that the kids had a vested interest in what we do in this department,” Guynn, Building and Grounds Director, said.
“It’s an honor,” Smith, Assistant Building and Grounds Director said. “It really is.”
Middle School Director Kristin Seymour said she’s very proud of Williams and Collett, but she also had to acknowledge their audio teacher, Brad Becker, who helped them grow over the years.
“He knew exactly what he wanted to do and he understood children finding their voice is exactly what we’re working on in every aspect of the curriculum,” Seymour said.
With their eight grade graduation Friday, Williams and Collett said they’re excited for the future and they plan to make another podcast soon.
