Lexington marks anniversary of deadly Comair Flight 5191 crash
LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – Today marks the anniversary of one of the deadliest tragedies in Lexington’s history.
On August 27, 2006, Comair Flight 5191 crashed during takeoff at Blue Grass Airport after using the wrong runway. The crash killed 49 people, leaving only one survivor.
Each year, the city pauses to remember the victims, their families, and the first responders who rushed to the scene. A memorial service is held at the Birds in Flight monument at the University of Kentucky Arboretum, where the names of those lost are etched in stone.
The memorial serves as a place of reflection and remembrance for loved ones and the Lexington community, ensuring that the lives lost on that day are never forgotten.
