Lexington marks 19 years since deadly Comair Flight 5191 crash

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – Tuesday marked 19 years since Comair Flight 5191 crashed during takeoff at Blue Grass Airport, a tragedy that claimed 49 lives and left one survivor.

The August 27, 2006 crash happened when the plane attempted takeoff from the wrong runway. It remains one of the deadliest aviation disasters in Kentucky history.

This year’s anniversary was observed at the “Birds in Flight” memorial at the University of Kentucky Arboretum, where families, first responders, and community members gathered to remember the victims.
