Lexington looks to create a better snow plan
Lexington, Ky (WTVQ): With snow expected to hit late tonight, starting At 8 p.m. Monday, crews will be out on the roadways, making sure high priority routes are clear.
Nancy Albright, with Public Works says, “this is not expected to be a storm where we will attempt to clear every neighborhood street because mother nature will probably take care of that before we can get there.”
But, that wasn’t the case about a month ago for Fayette County Public Schools The school district had nearly a week of NTI days and one snow day.
Albright says last time there was miscommunication regarding the school bus routes and snow plows. “And we have identified four or five schools that we were not making sure were treated all the way up to the front door of the school,” she said.
Both the city and the school use a geographic information system. Albright says they have not yet figured out how to merge the information. “Getting the bus route information out of Fayette County Schools data and into a format that we can use is a little more complicated. Not, impossible,” she said. “Just a little more complicated.”
Albright says there’s several hundred bus routes. She says it may never be 100 percent coverage, but she says she hopes there’s a resolution by next year. But, for this storm, Albright says salt works great when the temperatures are 30 degrees or higher. “Our pavement temperatures are a lot warmer right now, and our air temperatures are a lot warmer. Both of those help a lot in us better able to fight the snow that’s coming,” she said.
