Lexington Humane Society takes in animals after hurricanes, needs donations
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – The Lexington Humane Society recently took in animals from both Texas and Florida after the hurricanes, and now they need your help.
Those at the shelter say in the past two days, they’ve taken in 38 animals on top of more than 50 earlier this month.
The animals are coming from other shelters so that they have room there for animals that were displaced by hurricanes Harvey and Irma.
“When this tragedy struck, it was just one of those things, we knew knew we had to do something to help,” said Ashley Marcum. “We think that if something were to happen here, that they would be there for us, so we obviously wanted to reach out a hand and be there for them as well.”
With taking in more animals comes the need for more money. That’s why Marcum says the Humane Society is asking for donations.
“We’re happy to help these other communities in their time of need, but it does put a strain on our finances and what we need to do,” said Marcum.
Marcum says now through the end of October every donation made, up to $30,000 will be matched by two anonymous donors.
She says all of the more than 50 animals from the first Texas and Florida transport have been adopted, but there are several still in the shelter from this week’s arrival.
The Humane Society is looking for people to both foster and adopt the animals. If you are interested, click here.
