Lexington firefighters train for trench rescue

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – The Lexington Fire Department has a Technical Response Team, which is called out for special rescue situations, such as collapsed buildings or water rescues. Monday, they spent the day behind Fire Station 15, training for a trench rescue.

Captain Chris Frontz with the Lexington Fire Department said, "Everything we do, the more we do it, we get quicker at it."

The team was reviewing how to secure the walls of a collapsed trench to prevent a secondary collapse from happening during the rescue. Air quality in the trench is also monitored.

The team is made up of firefighters from different stations around the city and trains together every Monday. They are often called to other counties to assist other fire departments who don’t have special rescue teams.
