Lexington firefighter Matt Logsdon succumbs to battle with cancer

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – With a heavy heart, The Lexington Fire Department has confirmed that firefighter Matt Logsdon died early Wednesday morning at Norton hospital in Louisville, surrounded by family.

Logsdon was a ten year veteran with the Lexington Fire Department, before being diagnosed with cancer in January and retiring.  Logsdon fought a hard, and often public, battle against the disease, which affected his liver, lungs, spine, and skull.  His fellow firefighters, and the community, rallied around him with several fundraisers and appearances in the region.

Logsdon’s battle did not go unnoticed in Frankfort.  On April 12, 2016, Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes filed legislation expanding benefits for Kentucky firefighters. Senate Bill 195 allows the families of fallen firefighters who battled cancer to be entitled to a line-of-duty death benefit. The General Assembly unanimously approved the legislation and it became law.

Logsdon is survived by his wife, Jessica and his children Hayden, Patrick, and Maggie.

Funeral Services are pending.
