Lexington firefighter burned trying to save man who was on fire

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Lexington Fire Major Joe Madden was off-duty, sitting at a traffic light Wednesday evening when he saw a man, who was standing at the intersection of Fontaine Road and Richmond Road, catch on fire. The 21-year veteran of the fire department, along with several bystanders, rushed to the man’s aid and put out the fire.

The unidentified man was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to Lexington Police. Investigators say the man had been in an argument with his significant other when he poured gasoline on himself and set himself on fire. The man’s name wasn’t released.

Major Madden suffered burns to his face and hands, according to the fire department. Major Madden’s service record with the Lexington Fire Department includes certifications as a Paramedic, Hazardous Materials Technician and Rescue Technician. He has previously been awarded District Officer of the Year, two Meritorious Unit Citations and three Chief’s Commendation medals.

Major Madden is currently assigned to the Lexington Fire Department’s Training Division.
