Lexington firefighter burned helping man who was on fire

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – A Lexington firefighter is back on the job after being burned while helping a man who investigators say intentionally set himself on fire.

Major Joe Madden says he was off-duty and waiting at a traffic light Wednesday evening at the intersection of Richmond Road and Fontaine Road when he saw the man on fire.

Police say the man poured gasoline on himself and set himself on fire after getting into an argument with his significant other.

Madden, a 21-year-old veteran of the fire department, says several people stopped to help and they were able to smother the flames with someone’s jacket.

The unidentified man was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to Lexington Police. His name hasn’t been released.

Major Madden suffered burns to his face and hands, according to the fire department but Madden says he’s fine.

Major Madden’s service record with the Lexington Fire Department includes certifications as a Paramedic, Hazardous Materials Technician and Rescue Technician. He has previously been awarded District Officer of the Year, two Meritorious Unit Citations and three Chief’s Commendation medals.
