Lexington Fire Station 24 home to unique features

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Last week, the Lexington Fire Department has station tours at Lexington’s oldest firehouse as part of the department’s celebrations of 150 years. Wednesday, community members gathered at the department’s newest station put in the Masterson Station area because of the quickly growing community.

“We get to meet people in non-emergent settings,” says Lexington Fire Battalion Chief Jordan Saas. “We get to talk with them, we get to build relationships with them, we get to share our lives with them. We humanize the badge.”

At just two years old, the Lexington Fire Department says Station 24 has many unique features to make firefighting a little safer. According to the Lexington Fire Department, firefighters are 3 times more likely to get cancer than most people, so additions like open-air circulation in the fire gear locker room help to reduce that risk.

Other features like the station elevator might not seem special, but as the only station in the city with one, it gives the department a place to train for elevator emergencies. Fire station 24 is also home to the department’s only tanker, which is a vehicle that carries 3 times the amount of water than a typical firetruck.

The last event in the department’s 150th celebration tour is on Sunday at Masterson Station Park from 2-6 p.m. The fire prevention festival is open to the public and will have fire truck rides, a Touch-A-Truck, free food and more.
