Lexington-Fayette Urban County Council Candidates attend forum to answer questions ahead of November Election
LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) — Voters in Lexington will head to the polls in under 70 days, and while the presidential election will be a driving factor, certain district seats are up for grabs in the Lexington Fayette Urban County Council as well.
In the second district, incumbent Shayla Lynch is running once again, she says her district is one of the fastest growing, and progress has been made.
“So traffic is an issue right now making sure we have housing, affordable housing that can meet all of my neighbors needs and having a diverse group of housing, not just single family homes but town homes and apartments, is an issue that’s still on my plate as well. And then I look forward to doing some deep dives into some new things such as sober living homes,” says Lynch.
Meantime, Jacques Wigginton is also running for the 2nd district seat, Wigginton has been a council member before, and says experience helps when navigating pressing issues in the community.
“Experience does matter and not knowing can create problems, we have problems, affordable housing, underemployment, gun violence and the list goes on and on and on. It’s one thing to have a problem. It’s another to not have a plan that matches that problem,” added Wigginton.
In the race for the 10th district, Dave Sevigny is running unopposed, he says there are various problems he’d like to address this term, including the traffic.
“We’re kind of revising the short term rental statutes, so that’s, that’s actually playing out in this next few weeks. But it will probably come back to us prior to the end of the year. So we’re working, that’s kind of one thing we’re working on. Another thing that I’m kind of interested in is, reducing, our garbage carbon footprint,” said Sevigny.
There will be three more forums at other high schools to hear from the other candidates.
The next one is September 11 at Tates Creek High School.
