Lexington celebrates opening of Cardinal Run Park North, city’s largest new park in 25 years
LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – Lexington’s newest destination for outdoor fun is officially open. Mayor Linda Gorton joined city leaders and residents Thursday for a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Cardinal Run Park North — the city’s largest new park in more than two decades.
The 140-acre park, located off Parkers Mill Road, has been years in the making. Mayor Gorton said the land was donated 18 years ago and that Thursday’s opening represents a milestone for Lexington’s growing parks system.
“Here we are, 18 years after this land was generously donated to the community, and two years after we broke ground, officially opening Cardinal Run Park North,” the mayor said. “Cardinal Run Park is the largest park we’ve opened in over 25 years.”
The park features walking and jogging trails, sports fields, playgrounds, and a 9-acre dog park. It also includes a two-mile hiking trail and several open spaces for family activities and recreation.
Mayor Gorton said ribbon cuttings like this are about more than just new projects — they’re about improving quality of life. “Every time I hear someone say I’m cutting ribbons, I say cutting ribbons represents quality of life — whether it’s a new business or a new park,” she said.
City officials hope Cardinal Run Park North will become a go-to spot for families, athletes, and nature lovers across the community.
