Lexington boy receives Crimefighter Hero of the Year award

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – This is Crime Victims Right’s Week. It is both inspiring and heartbreaking when a young boy is honored as a crime fighting hero because he’s the innocent victim of a shooting.

Each year Fayette County Commonwealth’s Attorney, Ray Larson, holds what he calls a second class citizen luncheon for crime victims.

He says too often victims feel the justice system seems more concerned about the criminals instead of the victims.

Among Tuesday’s honorees, Antonio Reece, who was given the Crimefighter Hero of the Year award.

About a year ago Reece was sitting in his family’s SUV when he was shot in the head.

Now ten, Reece has already undergone four brain surgeries and has a fifth scheduled at the end of the month.

The man who shot Antonio, Alberto Contreras, was sentenced to 25-years in prison.

A gofundme page was started to help Antonio’s family raise money to buy a service dog for him.

His family is holding a yard sale and bake sale this Saturday morning at Al’s Auto Repair Shop in Nicholasville to raise money to fence-in their yard in anticipation of raising enough money to eventually get the dog.
