Lexington Animal Care warns dog owners after puppies test positive for parvo

LEXINGTON, KY. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – Lexington-Fayette Animal Care and Control is warning dog owners in the area about a deadly virus after several sick puppies were discovered.

Officials say officers recently found three stray puppies on Augusta Drive showing signs of illness.

According to the agency, all three puppies tested positive for canine parvovirus. They are currently isolated and receiving treatment.

The American Veterinary Medical Association says parvovirus, commonly known as parvo, is a highly contagious and potentially fatal disease that spreads through direct contact with infected feces as well as contaminated soil and surfaces.

Symptoms of the virus can include severe vomiting, lethargy, rapid dehydration and fever.

Animal Care and Control officials say more information about parvo can be found on their Facebook page.

They also emphasize that parvo is preventable and that vaccines are available to protect dogs from the virus.
