Lexington activates emergency winter weather plan, opens shelters for extreme cold
LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – Officials in Lexington have activated the city’s emergency winter weather plan to help people experiencing homelessness during expected extreme cold.
The plan will be in effect beginning this evening and continuing through the morning of March 18.
City officials say emergency shelters will expand capacity and relax some restrictions to accommodate more people during the cold weather.
Free fixed-route rides to shelters will also be available through Lextran to help individuals reach warming locations.
A temporary winter shelter is open at 1306 Versailles Road, where check-ins are available daily from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Officials say the shelter is expected to remain open through April 1.
