League of Women Voters announces TikTok contest
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WTVQ/Press Release) – The League of Women Voters of Kentucky (LWVKY) has announced its “Voters’ Choice” TikTok contest on redistricting, open to any undergraduate or graduate student who is at least 18 years old and currently enrolled in a Kentucky post-secondary institution.
Entries will be accepted Dec. 1, 2021 through Jan. 1, 2022 and must be 30 to 90 seconds in length. Prize awards will be $500 for first place, $300 for second place and $200 for third place. Complete rules and details are available at LWVKY.org/tiktok (click here).
This “Voters’ Choice” competition is designed to involve younger voters in the critically vital process of redistricting, and to educate the general public on the lasting impact that improperly drawn legislative boundaries can produce.
The social media competition is one more element of the LWVKY’s Fair Maps Campaign, an effort advocating for full and open transparency in Kentucky’s redistricting process with robust opportunities for public input.
Every ten years, following release of U.S. Census data, the Kentucky General Assembly is required to redraw congressional and state legislative boundaries to assure the ‘one person, one vote’ constitutional mandate. This constitutional requirement seeks to ensure that each person’s voting power carries equal weight across legislative districts that are as equal as possible in population.
The League of Women Voters advocates for a redistricting process that eliminates partisan gerrymandering nationwide – “Voters’ Choice” rather than “Legislators’ Choice,” according to the organization.
