Lawsuit challenges TikTok deal allowing app to continue operating in the U.S.

(ABC36 NEWS NOW) – A new group of anti-corruption lawyers is challenging the deal that allows TikTok to continue operating in the United States.

The lawsuit, filed by the Public Integrity Project, argues the administration of Donald Trump is violating a bipartisan law passed in 2024.

That law requires TikTok to be sold to a non-Chinese company or face a ban in the United States.

Under the current arrangement, a group of investors now controls the app. However, the lawsuit claims that ByteDance still maintains partial ownership, which the legal challenge argues does not meet the law’s requirements.

The lawsuit is seeking financial penalties and a possible renegotiation of the deal but does not request that TikTok be removed from U.S. app stores.
