Lawmakers revive fluoride control debate
FRANKFORT, KY. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – Two Kentucky lawmakers are renewing efforts to end the state’s mandate on water fluoridation. Representative Mark Hart of Falmouth and Senator Greg Elkins of Winchester told the Interim Joint Committee on State Government that they plan to file new legislation in 2026 to give local water districts control.
The proposal would remove the state requirement to add fluoride to public water systems and protect local districts from liability.
Supporters say the bill is about restoring local decision-making power, while critics argue that fluoridation is essential for preventing tooth decay and maintaining public dental health.
The Kentucky General Assembly is expected to take up the measure when lawmakers return for the next legislative session in January.
