Law enforcement remembers Trooper Cameron Ponder 1 year after death

ASHLAND, Ky. (WTVQ) – Kentucky State Police, Sheriff’s Offices, and Police Departments around the region took a moment on Tuesday to remember slain Trooper Joseph “Cameron” Ponder today, one year after he was gunned down during a traffic stop.

Multiple law enforcement agencies in the state observed a moment of silence for Trooper Ponder, to honor his life and sacrifice.

Ponder received a posthumous Medal of Valor back in June for his service, the same month that a portion of I-24 was renamed the “Trooper Joseph Cameron Ponder Memorial Highway.”

The man police say was responsible for Ponder’s death, 25-year-old Joseph Thomas Johnson-Shanks of Missouri, was shot and killed after a massive manhunt.
