Laurel County schools end academic year early following tornado disaster

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — Laurel County Public Schools has officially ended the 2024–2025 school year as of Friday, May 16, following the devastating tornado that impacted much of the community over the weekend.

According to Superintendent Denise M. Griebel, district administrators have been in regular contact with the Kentucky Department of Education to determine the best course of action under current state guidelines. The early closure is intended to allow staff and students time to recover and focus on restoring stability to their lives.

“We believe this decision will allow us to focus on our students and employees who have been adversely impacted,” the district said in a statement. “We continue to coordinate with local, state, and federal agencies in the restoration of services to our community.”

While the school year ends earlier than expected, officials say they are saddened that students won’t get to participate in the typical last-week activities. However, the Family Resource and Youth Service Centers will continue outreach efforts and provide assistance to affected families.

Graduation is still scheduled for Saturday, May 31, with additional updates to be shared on each school’s website and Facebook page.
