Cell phone ‘ping’ leads to arrest in domestic violence case

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ) – A track on a cell phone leads to the arrest of a man in Laurel County.

The Laurel County Sheriff’s Office says 911 dispatchers received a call and could hear an argument between a man and a woman on the open line. At one point, dispatchers heard the man say he was going to kill the woman and cut her tongue out, according to deputies.

Dispatchers were able to ping the cell phone and get a location.

Deputies say they tried to pull over the car the two were in and, at one point, saw the passenger side door open and a woman try to get out. The driver sped off but finally stopped.

They say the woman in the car had been struck in the head several times and they found a pipe to smoke meth on the driver, 43-year-old Shawn Kurt Mulrenin.

Mulrenin was charged with assault, domestic violence, unlawful imprisonment, fleeing or evading police, possession of drug paraphernalia, and wanton endangerment.
