LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — The Laurel County Fire Department has confirmed the tragic line of duty death of Major Leslie Leatherman, who was killed during Friday night’s tornado response.
According to the department’s release, Major Leatherman was responding to an emergency fire alarm when the tornado struck the Sunshine Hills community. He was later found deceased in a field along Sunshine Hills Road, where responders discovered him shielding an injured woman — later identified as his wife, Michelle Leatherman.
Emergency crews say Major Leatherman appeared to use his body to protect her from the storm. She was critically injured and taken to the hospital. Officials say it’s unclear whether Major Leatherman recognized her at the time, given the darkness and chaos caused by the storm.
Leatherman had responded to the call from home late Friday night as severe weather warnings were issued across the area. Multiple emergency situations were reported within minutes of each other, indicating widespread storm damage.
In a statement, the Laurel County Fire Department called Leatherman’s actions “the highest ideals of public service and sacrifice,” and said he will be remembered as a leader, hero, and brother in service.
Flags have been lowered at the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial in his honor. Funeral arrangements are pending.
