Laurel County firefighter killed during tornado response
LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — The Laurel County Fire Department has announced the death of one of its own during overnight tornado response efforts.
According to a post from the department, Major Roger Leslie Leatherman was fatally injured while assisting in the aftermath of a tornado that struck the area.
The department said Major Leatherman had served the community for 39 years, dedicating his life to helping others in their time of need. “His courage, commitment, and sacrifice will never be forgotten,” the post read.
The department is asking the public to keep Leatherman’s family, friends, and fellow first responders in their thoughts and prayers.
As search and recovery operations continue, officials urge residents to stay clear of impacted areas to allow emergency teams to work safely.
“This is a heartbreaking reminder of the dangers our first responders face every day and the incredible bravery they show in the face of disaster,” the department said.
