UPDATE: Suspect fed meth to neighbor’s dogs
LONDON, Ky. (WTVQ) – The Laurel County Sheriff says two dogs died from ingesting methamphetamine, and results are pending after a toddler was also tested for the drug.
40-year-old Benjamin Burdette has been arrested in connection to the case. He’s accused of doing meth in front of his two-year-old daughter and animal cruelty.
Deputies were originally called to the home on White Oak Road Tuesday morning because of an argument. That’s when deputies say they found medication, chemicals, and meth pipes all within reach of the little girl. Additionally, they say they found two dogs that were in need desperate of help.
The animals were taken to the Cumberland Valley Animal shelter. One died during treatment, according to detectives, while the other had to be put down because it was in so much pain from the drug.
Burdette told officers he had people over the night before and that someone might have fed the dogs meth. Investigators are still looking into those claims.
The two-year-old was taken by social services.
Burdette’s bond has been set at $10,000. Jail records don’t indicate whether he has an attorney.
