Lake Reba gets new ADA accessible kayak launch

RICHMOND, Ky. (WTVQ) – Newly installed at Lake Reba in Richmond is an ADA accessible kayak launch, one of the first in the State thanks to the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wild life.

The launch is also a dual ramp that can be the courtesy boat ramp for those using John boats etc.

“They decided this was a great lake and we had enough traffic to install it and they wanted it to be a pilot program to see if other lakes around Kentucky can utilize a dock like this” said Director of Recreation with the Parks and Recreation Department, Erin Moore.

Moore says the kayak launch is a great addition to the lake…giving those who are younger or who may have mobility issues an easier way to enjoy the water.

“It’s pretty exciting to have something that’s the first of its kind in Kentucky and I think its really neat because Lake Reba has really set itself up to be a destination location for people who might have family members who utilize wheelchairs or have mobility issues” said Moore.

She hopes the launch will bring more tourism.

“Having the kayak launch here really bringing those boats in promotes fishing, promotes being outside and just being outdoors is really one of our biggest goals” added Moore.

She says the launch has already attracted many kayakers since its grand opening a week ago…Jay Rogers with Mike’s Hike and Bike shop in Richmond was excited to try it out.

“I think it’s fantastic. It’s very easy to use very user friendly it even has instructions and a QR code to find a video to how to use it, I think it’s a great addition here at Lake Reba” said Rogers.

It’s not only beneficial for his kayaking ventures but for his company, too.
The shop rents kayaks. Rogers says hopes to see an increase in demand there now as well.

“We see an increase of kayaking every single year we have several places around the county to kayak but with this being so close and such easy access I think we’re going to see an even greater increase now” said Rogers.
