KYTC to install warning system at Laurel County intersection

MANCHESTER, Ky. (WTVQ)- The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) will be installing an Intersection Conflict Warning System (ICWS) to a busy intersection in Laurel county.

The approach warning system will be installed at the KY 192/Thompson Poynter Road/Boggs Road intersection.

The system is an attempt to reduce the amount of crashes at the intersection and will be activated on Wednesday, August 2 at 6:30 AM.

ICWS studies have shown a significant decrease in total, fatal and injury, right-angle, and rear-end crashes for two-lane at two-lane intersections.

LED-enhanced intersection warning signs, oversized stop signs, and “Cross Traffic Does Not Stop” signs, and other safety measures, have been implemented at the intersection in the past to decrease the crash rate.

The system is able to detect traffic on all approaches and operates similar to traffic loops used to sense vehicles in order to activate traffic signals.

These systems have proven effective in decreasing crashes involving vehicles traveling through or on major roads and reducing the difficulty in determining appropriate gaps in traffic among drivers.

The ICWS gives motorists real-time warnings about traffic conditions and have shown to be cost-effective safety improvements.

The existing LED-enhanced intersection warning signs will be taken down once the new ICWS system is operational.

Motorists are asked to be aware of the new warning system and be alert for changes in traffic flow around the intersection.
