UPDATE: State Rep. still trying to reach parents in Nice

ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. (WTVQ) State Representative Jim DuPlessis says he stayed up late last night waiting to hear from his parents, John and Kitty Duplessis, who were scheduled to be in Nice the day of the terror attack.

He doesn’t know for sure if they spent the entire day there or not, or already moved on to their next city on their trip throughout France. But he says he’s fairly certain they are safe.

“We felt confident that they were okay. We really did. I guess our faith saw…we were just faithful that they would be okay I guess. Instead of focusing on the negative I just chose to think of the positive.”

DuPlessis says he wasn’t worried because of the outpouring of support on social media.

“It was just you know…it was honestly when so many people were reaching out to us and I didn’t have a chance to worry because I was constantly getting Facebook encouragement to be honest with you. Over and over and over and over hundreds and hundreds of people.”

Around 1am his dad finally came through with a group text sent out to family.

“I don’t remember exactly. It was something about CNN and all their coverage.”

But when he asked his dad whether or not he heard about the attack there was no response. Because of their age he doesn’t think his mom and dad would be out late celebrating Bastille Day with everyone else

“Maybe in their younger days I can see them doing that for sure. But I got to think they’re neatly tucked in bed.”

And this is not the first time the family has had a close call with terror.

He says, “They were in New York the day before 9/11 flying out to Europe and they were in Europe on 9/11. And of course, you know, everything, all the flights and everything got shut down. We weren’t sure how we were going to get them home for a while. So yeah they were traveling on 9/11 and now they’re in Europe in this one as well.”

Despite the close calls, DuPlessis says he wants his parents to continue to travel and enjoy their golden years together. He says his parents are supposed to be sightseeing around France for another week and are due to land in Louisville on the 23rd.
