Ky. regulators OK plan to move coal ash
FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — Regulators have approved a plan by East Kentucky Power Cooperative to move 560,000 tons of coal ash to a new landfill in central Kentucky.
The Public Service Commission’s go-ahead Friday means the utility can move ash from an aging power plant along the Kentucky River in Clark County.
The utility plans to shut down the last two units at the coal-fired plant by April 2016.
Trucking the ash to the new site will eliminate the potential threat of a large spill into the river.
The waste will be relocated to a landfill at the J.K. Smith power plant, also in Clark County.
Construction of the landfill is expected to start next month. The utility says the project’s cost will eventually add 34 cents per month to average residential customer bills.
