Ky. man sentenced to 2 years for assaulting officer during Jan. 6 Capitol riot
MAGNOLIA, Ky. (WTVQ) — A Kentucky man was sentenced Tuesday to over two years in prison for assaulting a police officer during the Jan. 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol riot.
Clayton Mullins, of LaRue County, was also sentenced to three years of supervised release and to pay over $81,000 in restitution to various departments, including the architect of the Capitol and a Metropolitan Police Department officer.
He pleaded guilty to a felony charge of assaulting, resisting or impeding certain officers on Sept. 6, 2023.
According to court documents, on Jan. 6, 2021, Mullins pushed against barricaded fences and officers to get closer to the Capitol. Later that evening, he waved other rioters to join him in pushing inside the Capitol. At one point, a police officer was pushed to the ground and Mullins “violently” grabbed the officer’s leg. The officer was eventually dragged down the Capitol steps and further attacked by other rioters.
When the officer tried to climb back up the steps, Mullins pushed the officer back down the steps and into the crowd of rioters.
The FBI arrested Mullins on Feb. 23, 2021, in Mayfield.
This case was investigated by the FBI’s Washington and Louisville Field Offices, which identified Mullins as BOLO (Be on the Lookout) No. 131 on its seeking information photos.
In the years since Jan. 6, 2021, more than 1,200 people have been charged in nearly all 50 states for crimes related to the breach of the U.S. Capitol.
