Ky. Allergy Season Expected To Be Shorter, But Severe

This year’s long winter may mean allergy symptoms will get a late start.

But Dr. Tracie Overbeck at Allergy and Asthma Physicians of Central Kentucky said when allergies do hit, they will hit hard.

Overbeck said cold temperatures in March probably cut about three to four weeks off the usual allergy season.

“Usually you have about two or three weeks that you build up and start having some symptoms, knowing that it’s probably going to be allergies,” Overbeck said.

“I think this year it’s probably going to be that you’re going to have them within a week so people are going to go from being ok to really having significant allergy symptoms and having problems.”

Louisville is listed as number five on the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America’s list of “Spring Allergy Capitals for 2013”.

Overbeck said surrounding areas, like Lexington, will likely see similar conditions.

“You’re going to really see a spike in the pollens which is then going to lead to significant symptoms,” Overbeck said.
