KWC lands Boyle County’s Colton Elkins
OWENSBORO, Ky. (April 15, 2016) — Colton Elkins, the third all-time shot blocker in Kentucky high school history from Boyle County High School in Danville, has signed a national letter-of-intent to play basketball at eight-time NCAA Division II Champion Kentucky Wesleyan College, according to Panther head coach Happy Osborne.
Elkins, a 6-foot-7, 200-pound, power forward, led the Rebels with 13.4 points, 11.6 rebounds, 154 blocks and a 53.2 field goal percentage in starting all 27 games for head coach Steve Adams. He also was third in assists with 49 and steals with 24. He blocked a career-high 13 shots against Lexington Lafayette.
In 2016, he received honorable mention All-State recognition from the Lexington Herald-Leader, All-12th Region honors and chosen first team All-Area by The Advocate-Messenger. His teammates voted him the Most Valuable Player. Boyle County finished 15-12 with a trip to the 12th Region semifinals.
“We have recruited Colton relentlessly for the past two years,” Osborne stated. “He’s long and athletic with a 37-inch vertical jump and good hands. His uncanny ability to block shots inside will be a huge asset to us. With hard work, he can develop into a very good low post scorer. Colton’s also an excellent student.”
As a junior, Elkins led the team in blocks with 151 and field goal shooting at 54.0 percent. He finished second in rebounding at 7.0 while scoring 7.2 points in 31 games and 30 starts. He also had 34 assists and 21 steals. His postseason honors included selected All-Area and All-45th District.
The Rebels won the 12th Region Championship along to the 2015 state semifinals with a 28-7 record.
His sophomore season, he led with 95 blocks and produced a second-best 9.4 points, 7.1 rebounds and a 50.5 field goal percentage in 27 starts and 28 outings. He was second in assists with 44 and collected 15 steals. The Rebels finished 18-10 and earned a trip to the 12th Region semifinals.
He closed his four-year career with 893 points, a school record 419 blocked shots, 785 rebounds, 134 assists and 64 steals and in 110 games and 84 starts.
Elkins also participated four years on the track squad in the high and long jump. He twice won the high and long jump as a sophomore and a junior. He set the school high jump with a 6-foot-7 leap.
He is the son of James and Rhoda Elkins of Junction City, Ky.
