KSU ready for road trip to Fort Valley State

Frankfort, Ky.-Kentucky State University football will begin the second half of its season the same way it started, on the road.

The Thorobreds (1-4, 1-1) return to SIAC play on Saturday as they travel to Fort Valley State University for a 2 p.m. ET kickoff at Wildcat Stadium. The Wildcats (1-4, 1-2) are coming off back-to-back road losses to Benedict College and Alderson Broaddus University.

The back end of the schedule favors the Thorobreds as they will only travel for one more contest after their battle with FVSU. When the season comes to a close, KSU will have traveled over 5,000 miles by bus in 2016.

“The more athletic you are, the more focused you are, and the more mentally tough you are, the easiest traveling is, and it’s more so here,” said head coach John L. Smith. “We have to continue to become more mentally tough, and I do like how our student-athletes are accepting how much we demand when we travel. They’re working at it, and we’re getting better.”

Along with the schedule favoring KSU with home contests, the remaining portion of the schedule features all SIAC opponents. Following the 17-14 victory against Central State University in the Circle City Classic, the Thorobreds sit at 1-0 in the SIAC West Division.

“We have as good of a chance as anybody right now,” said Smith. “Our goal is to go win our side of the league and win a league championship.”
