KSU football ready for 2016 home opener
Frankfort, Ky.-Kentucky State University will take on Virginia State University in the home opener at Alumni Stadium on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. ET.
The contest will be the home debut of head coach John L Smith. In Smith’s 25-year head coaching career he has been at the helm at seven different universities including KSU. In six previous home opening debuts, he has gone 4-2, including three straight with his recent stops at Michigan State University, University of Arkansas, and Fort Lewis College.
The Thorobreds (0-2) are coming off back-to-back road losses against #6 Charleston Southern University and SIAC foe Morehouse College. The Trojans (2-0) enter the contest with wins over Lenoir-Rhyne and Tusculum to begin their season.
“We’re getting better,” said Smith. “Usually you see a lot of improvement from week one to week two, and we’re seeing it now. We saw it from our defense, they’ve made some improvements. Our offense hasn’t and that’s our fault as coaches, we have to go back and simplify some things, but as a whole, we’re getting better.”
In the opening two games of the season the offense has struggled, scoring only 10 points and accumulating 239 yards of total offense. Senior running back Reginal Harris has been the bright spot, racking up over 100 yards of total offense in both games and scored the only touchdown of the season. Dating back to 2015, Harris has picked up over 100 yards of total offense in five straight games.
The game will be streamed live on KSUThorobreds.com.
