KSP: Man found guilty in death of London City Police Officer Logan Medlock
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – Casey Preston Byrd has been found guilty of multiple charges, including murder, in connection with the death of London City Police Officer Logan K. Medlock, according to the Kentucky State Police. KSP says the jury reached its verdict Thursday.
Byrd was convicted of murder, two counts of third-degree criminal mischief, and operating a motor vehicle under the influence of intoxicants. The jury recommended a sentence of 20 years in prison. Byrd’s sentencing is scheduled for August 26, 2024, according to court records.
The tragic incident occurred on November 30, 2022, when Officer Medlock, 26, was killed in a two-vehicle collision in London, Kentucky. According to Kentucky State Police, at approximately 12:49 a.m., Byrd, 36, was driving a 2022 Ram pickup truck northbound on KY 229 (Barbourville Road) when he entered the intersection of South Main Street and struck Officer Medlock’s police cruiser, a 2019 Dodge Charger.
As we first reported, Officer Medlock, who was on duty at the time, sustained life-threatening injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Laurel County Coroner’s Office. Byrd was uninjured in the collision.
Alcohol was suspected to be a contributing factor in the crash, according to investigators, leading to Byrd’s initial arrest and charges of murder and operating a motor vehicle under the influence with aggravating circumstances.
