KSP: Man fatally shot by troopers in Perry County

PERRY COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ) – Kentucky State Police say a man was fatally wounded during a confrontation with troopers on Sunday in Perry County.

Police say they responded to Doctors Row in the Chavies community after Constable Ben Stidham reported shots fired.

Police say Stidham was conducting a traffic stop near the Wendell Ford Airport when he says he heard several gunshots coming from a camper nearby.

Troopers arrived at the scene at around 9:30 p.m. and say they tried to make contact with 53-year-old Michael Asher, who was inside the camper.

They say Asher began yelling at troopers and refused to come out.

Police say they also tried contacting him by phone.

Troopers say, a  short time later, Asher opened the camper door, armed with a firearm that he began raising toward them. That’s when troopers opened fire, fatally wounding Asher.

Asher was pronounced dead at the scene.  No one else was injured

An autopsy has been scheduled for Monday.
