KSP: Man charged with attempted murder in stabbing of mother, stepfather

CRANES NEST, Ky. (WTVQ) – Kentucky State Police say a man is behind bars, accused in the stabbing of his mother and stepfather.

Troopers say they received a call about a stabbing at about 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.  According to officers, the stabbing took place along KY 1803 in Knox Co., but the victims drove to Black Water Road in Laurel Co. afterward.

Police say the victims, 52-year-old Connie Smith and 49-year-old Randy Smith, were then airlifted to UK Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

Detectives on the scene say their investigation led them to 35-year-old Joe Gibson.  Gibson is the son of Connie Smith and stepson of Randy Smith.  Gibson was charged with two counts of attempted murder and taken to the Knox Co. Detention Center.
