KSP: Expired plate leads to drug bust

MOREHEAD, Ky. (WTVQ) – An expired registration plate led to a drug bust involving 300 grams of synthetic drugs, says State police.

Benjamin T. Russell was stopped by a trooper just before 4 a.m. on Friday morning, for an expired registration plate. Russell stopped the car, and his passenger, Joseph W. McCarty, got out and fled on foot.

Police say that, after a short pursuit and subsequent capture, a search of McCarty resulted in approximately 300 grams of synthetic drugs, suspected to be bath salts.

McCarty was arrested, said KSP, charged with the Trafficking and Possession of Synthetic Drugs, as well as Fleeing Police, Resisting Arrest, Disorderly Conduct, and several others.

Russsel also was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, operating on a suspended license, failure to maintain insurance, and several others.
 
The incident remains under investigation by KSP.
