KSP: Burglary suspect drives box truck into business

LONDON, Ky. (WTVQ) – A Corbin woman is arrested after Kentucky State Police say she rammed a box truck into a business in an attempt to burglarize it.

State Police say an alarm went off at the Fitzpatrick’s Furniture store on U.S. Highway 25 in Corbin on Tuesday around 12:30 p.m.

Police say a Commercial Vehicle Enforcement officer was at his home when he heard the alarm and went to check it out.

When he arrived, police say he discovered a box truck belonging to the business had been driven into the store in an apparent burglary attempt.

After watching video surveillance footage, investigators say they were able to identify the suspect as 44-year-old Penny J. Barnes, of Corbin.

Store manager, Allan Davis, says they recognized Barnes on surveillance footage because she was a frequent customer.

“Totally out of character, I mean every interaction I’ve had with her was pleasant and positive,” says Davis. “She was always in looking at new things and some of the things we carried, just a really good customer.”

Davis says the damage to the building will be costly. He says the entire delivery door is ripped off and there’s a 30-foot hole in the side of the building.

Barnes is charged with burglary and theft by unlawful taking.

The store says despite the damage, she didn’t get away with any items from the store.
