KODA set organ donor record in 2019

LOUSVILLE, Ky. (WTVQ) – The Kentucky Organ Donor Affiliates (KODA) had its highest number of organ donors ever in 2019.

The organ procurement organization of Kentucky, southern Indiana and Huntington, West Virginia, had 137 organ donors, which resulted in 416 organs being transplanted, according to KODA.

Additionally, there were a record-breaking 523 tissue donors, which was a 42-percent increase over the previous year, according to KODA.

The organization’s partner, Kentucky Lions Eye Bank, had 734 cornea donors, which resulted in 1,142 corneal transplants in 2019, according to KODA.

Despite the record numbers, the number of people waiting for a transplant far exceeds the organs, tissue and corneas that are available.  Tragically, 22-people die each day awaiting a transplant, according to KODA.
