KHSAA Boys’ Sweet 16 – Finals Recap – Dunbar wins state
LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) – Paul Laurence Dunbar captured its first Kentucky high school basketball championship Sunday, defeating Doss 61-52 in the championship game of the KHSAA Boys’ Sweet 16.
Taveion Hollingsworth scored 20 points, including seven during a game-opening 15-2 run that propelled the Bulldogs to victory in the first title game in 15 years matching teams from the state’s two largest cities.
Hollingsworth was named the tournament’s most valuable player after scoring 86 points in four games.
Dunbar (33-6), the state runner-up in 1993 and 1994, won the first state title for a Lexington school since Lexington Catholic won in 2002. Louisville-based Doss (30-6) was denied in its second trip to the finals; it also lost in 1980.
Dunbar, the 11th Region champion, hit seven of its first 13 shots while 6th Region champion Doss went 1 for 10 over the first 5 ½ minutes.
The Bulldogs stretched their lead to 26-7 in the second quarter and 46-25 early in the fourth quarter. The Dragons got no closer than nine points down the stretch.
Kenyi Bryant led the Dragons with 23 points.
Darius Williams added 15 points and Dontell Brown had 11 for the Bulldogs.
