Kentucky, Tennessee receiving advanced placement grants
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — More Kentucky and Tennessee students from low-income families will be able to take advantage of advanced placement classes and exams with new grants to help defray the tests’ cost.
The grants are part of $28.4 million awarded to 38 states; Washington, D.C.; and the Virgin Islands by the U.S. Department of Education.
Kentucky is receiving $505,000, while Tennessee was awarded $256,000.
Education Department official John King says the grants help eliminate barriers for low-income students and give access to college-level critical thinking and reasoning skills.
The agency says by subsidizing test fees for low-income students, it hopes to encourage the students to take advanced placement tests and obtain college credit for high school courses, reducing the time and cost required for a college degree.
