Kentucky teachers to visit Montpelier estate
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky teachers will be linked with top constitutional scholars through a project driven by the University of Louisville’s McConnell Center and the Robert H. Smith Center for the Constitution at James Madison’s Montpelier estate in Virginia.
McConnell Center Director Gary Gregg says the idea is to help enrich social studies curriculum across Kentucky.
Social studies teachers involved in the center’s Teacher Scholars Program will attend conferences at Montpelier on full scholarships, starting as early as next spring. A new group of teachers will visit each year.
Six residential weekend seminars a year will focus on different perspectives on constitutional studies, such as the creation of the Bill of Rights and the role of slavery.
Gregg also plans to arrange future Montpelier visits for students in the center’s McConnell Scholars program.
