FRANKFORT, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – Newly released 911 calls are giving the public its first glimpse into the chaos that unfolded during Tuesday’s deadly shooting on the campus of Kentucky State University, as police identify the suspect now charged with murder and first-degree assault.
Police say the suspect, 48-year-old Jacob Lee Bard of Evansville, Indiana, was arrested and charged after one student was killed and another was critically injured in the shooting near the Whitney M. Young, Jr. Hall residence hall.
In one 911 call, a caller can be heard reporting, “We have an active shooter at the Young building. I think they have them detained.” The call continues by saying emergency responders were attempting to evacuate two victims from the scene.
Frankfort Police say dispatch received the initial call reporting the shooting at approximately 3:10 p.m. Officers arrived within minutes at 3:14 p.m. By that time, Kentucky State University Campus Police had already taken swift action and placed Bard into custody.
Investigators confirmed that Bard is not a student at Kentucky State University. Police have also stated the shooting appears to be an isolated incident and that there is no ongoing threat to the campus community.
One person died at the scene. The second victim was taken to the hospital and remains in critical condition. A motive for the shooting has not yet been released.
During a brief statement following the shooting, KSU President Dr. Koffi Akakpo asked for prayers for the campus community, saying students and the university are in need of support as they begin to heal.
The investigation remains ongoing as police continue to process evidence and interview witnesses.
