PINE RIDGE, Ky. (WTVQ) – Kentucky State Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting in Wolfe County.
Troopers say they were the target of a shooter around 9:30 p.m. Monday. The incident happened in Pine Ridge, just off of Highway 15 behind the Dessie Scott Children’s home.
State Police say they received a call for help from a Wolfe County resident, who claimed that 39- year-old Matthew Preston was armed and threatening him with his gun. ABC 36 was told three troopers went to investigate and confronted Preston, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio. Police say that the troopers only talked with Preston for a brief moment before shots rang out.
"From what one of the witnesses says here on the scene that he did hear troopers speaking with him trying to get him to drop the firearm at that time. He did not and that’s when he fired at a trooper and then troopers returned fire upon him, " said Master Trooper Joe Veeneman.
Troopers say Preston was transported to Kentucky River Medical Center in Jackson then airlifted to University of Kentucky Hospital. According to State Police, he suffered non life-threatening injuries.
Preston has been charged with two counts of attempted murder of a police officer and will be taken into custody once he is released from the hospital.
