Kentucky sees third straight year of decline in overdose deaths, new data shows

FRANKFORT, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) — Kentucky is continuing to see progress in the fight against drug overdose deaths, according to Governor Andy Beshear. The governor announced new data showing a 30.2% decrease in overdose fatalities in 2024 compared to the previous year.

The state recorded just over 1,400 overdose deaths last year — the lowest total in several years. It marks the third consecutive year that overdose deaths have declined across the Commonwealth.

Despite the decline, officials say fentanyl and methamphetamine remain major factors in these tragedies. Fentanyl was found in 62% of overdose deaths, while meth was detected in 51%.

Governor Beshear praised the work of treatment centers, local agencies, and law enforcement in helping drive the numbers down — but emphasized there’s still more work to do.
