Kentucky Republicans and Democrats react to Gov. Beshear’s potential VP nomination

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWSNOW) — A state divided as Kentucky’s Democratic Governor Andy Beshear endorses the presumptive nominee Kamala Harris. While others in the state, still standing behind trump.

Andy Westberry with the Republican Party of Kentucky says he doesn’t think Beshear will make it on the ticket despite his endorsement and national attention.

“He’s been using this as an opportunity to raise his own name ID and try to get to Washington,” Westberry said.

Meanwhile, Democrats here in Kentucky voted in what they’re calling ‘overwhelming’ support for the endorsement of Harris.

Kentucky Democratic Party Chairman Colmon Elridge releasing a statement saying on the endorsement.

“Over the last four years, vice president Kamala Harris has been a proven partner to President Joe Biden and delivered on their shared vision to level the playing field for more Americans,” Elridge said. “Vice President Harris is ready to serve as president on day one and finish the job that Joe Biden started.”

Westberry says her previous work in California shows she’s not fit to run.

“She’s going to come with some baggage and she’s going to have to explain a lot of that,” he said.

Westberry also sharing his thoughts on Beshear’s work.

“The man doesn’t do any kind of legislative outreach, he governs by way of camera,” Westberry said.

The democratic party opposes that view saying when November comes, they will vote for Harris if she’s on the ticket.
“During these next few months, both Donald Trump and J.D. Vance will try to claim that there’s more that divides us than unites us, relying on fear to drive a wedge between you and your neighbor,” Elridge said.

Westberry says they’ve coalesced around the new nominee despite Beshear’s comments. Adding that they don’t think Beshear will make it on the ticket by November.

“If they’re going to pick Andy Beshear, what does he bring to the table? He’s not a prolific fundraiser, he doesn’t come from a battleground state, this isn’t a state they’re going to be able to win, so you just got to wonder, why Andy Beshear,” Westberry said.
