Kentucky Power customers to receive aid from increased funds
ASHLAND, Ky. (WTVQ)- Kentucky Power’s Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) will allow almost double the amount of low income families they can help this year.
Customer contributions to HEAP increased from 15 cents to 30 cents a month due to a recent order from Kentucky Public Service Commission.
Kentucky Power agreed to match the contributions with shareholder funds.
$1 million will be generated this year to help with heating and cooling to nearly 2,500 homes in the region through the partnership.
HEAP is a separate entity from the federally funded Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).
Kentucky Power HEAP funds are distributed to customers who meet certain income requirements set by community action agencies.
Poorly operating or broken heating systems and lack of insulation in the home can cause energy spikes in the winter and there are even issues in the summer with spikes.
In partnership with the American Electric Power Foundation, Kentucky Power has provided assistance with basic home repairs and weatherization.
Customers are encouraged to consider signing up for Average Monthly Payments (AMP), which is a 12 month average billing option that helps to even out the winter and summer spikes.
