Kentucky Organ Donor Affiliates marks historic 2023 with nearly 700 lives saved

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WTVQ) — Kentucky Organ Donor Affiliates marked another historic year after saving nearly 700 lives through organ donation.

In 2023, 299 organ donors translated into 729 transplants, the most in KODA history.

“Every day, our goal is to save lives, and we are consistently amazed by the selfless choices people make when they choose donation,” said Julie Bergin, president and CEO of KODA. “Giving the gift of life is the most generous act a person can make, and without our donors and donor families, we would have lost nearly 700 of our community members last year.”

Other numbers from KODA include:

  • 76 heart transplants
  • 180 liver transplants
  • 400 kidney transplants
  • 64 lung transplants
  • 875 cornea donors
  • 90,000 new names added to the Kentucky Organ Donor Registry

KODA saw the highest number of donations and transplants for hearts, kidneys, livers and lungs last year.

Additionally, 633 tissue donors provided help to nearly 50,000 patients in need of a transplantable graft for medical procedures.
